On Friday night, 16 March, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) launched Operation Knight Life, an operation geared at preventing incidents of crime at night time.
The joint operation between the JMPD, South African Police Service, Emergency Medical Services, Environmental Health, and the Liquor Board is expected to give residents and visitors a sense of safety in and around places of entertainment at night.
Metro police said, as part of the operations, taverns and bars will be visited to inform owners about the operation in order to obtain their support.
“We want everyone to enjoy their night in a safe manner,” said David Tembe, the new chief of the Johannesburg Metro Police Department.
Tembe said Operation Knight Life will also intensify police visibility at night in the City and issues of compliance with places of entertainment will be addressed.
