Roadworthy test corruption uncovered in Midrand

JOBURG – Three nabbed at a privately owned vehicle testing station after being found to be using someone's ID to process a roadworthy certificate.

Three employees were nabbed at their place of work for alleged fraud and corruption.

According to the spokesperson of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), Simon Zwane, the three were arrested on 18 January at their place of work. The trio is employed by a well known privately owned vehicle testing station in Midrand.

Zwane pointed out that the three were arrested for allegedly using someone’s copy of an identity document (ID) to generate roadworthy certificates. Zwane said the person whose ID was used, was not aware of the illegal operation going on with the copy of their ID. The three will appear in court soon.

The arrest was done during a joint operation between the RTMC and the South African police. Zwane said the RTMC has prioritised fraud and corruption cases in the traffic fraternity in efforts to reduce crashes and improve safety on the roads. He said the clampdown on corruption at vehicle-testing stations will continue. He also said un-roadworthy vehicles pose a major risk on the roads and contribute to crashes that lead to fatalities.
