A scrapyard supervisor (40) was arrested on 8 January in Tswelopele for being in possession of suspected stolen copper cables and diesel.
The arrest was executed by members of the Ekurhuleni North Cluster crime prevention unit who received a tip-off while conducting a patrol in the area.
The 1 200kg of copper and more than 600 litres was seized. “Upon their arrival, the team was received by the 40-year-old who introduced himself as the supervisor of the business,” said spokesperson for Ivory Park Police Station Captain Bernard Matimulane.
“The supervisor failed to explain to the police the origin of the items.”
The combined value of the recovered items is estimated to be more than R5 000.
The station commander for Ivory Park police station Brigadier David Ngcobo, commended the members of the public who tipped off the police about the existence of these items. He called on residents to emulate the example of the whistleblowers.
“The informants in this matter have done us proud and I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation for this valuable effort,” he said.
“Any member of the public familiar with Ivory Park and the crime situation there, knows we need this level of assistance in spades.”
