The protest was sparked by the those in local small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs). Probuild is a building and civil construction company.

According to the forum, local entrepreneurs should be paid market-related rates and work under better conditions.

“The resilience and courage of the community are commendable because they stood united throughout the protests,” said the forum’s executive committee member Benson Motsumi.

A meeting was set up after the protests between community representatives and Probuild to try and resolve the situation.

The meeting yielding the following agreements:

  • SMMEs will be paid the market-related rates
  • Local SMMEs will be given the necessary training and skills transfers as part of empowerment
  • A 30 per cent value of the phase two project will be allocated to local SMMEs.

“I would like to thank the Midrand police for ensuring that all protesters were safe as well as all the volunteers that assisted in organising the protest,” said Motsumi.

“Mass actions prove that the struggle for economic emancipation continues.

“We’d also like to thank those who donated, assisted and volunteered their resources together with the intelligence team for their outstanding work.”
