Domestic violence led to the burning down of two houses in Kanana, Midrand in the early hours of 2 December.
An ex-boyfriend allegedly burned down a house belonging to the mother of his ex-girlfriend and his actions resulted in a retaliation attack which eventually ended with a house belonging to his brother also being set alight on the very same day.
According to the spokesperson of the Rabie Ridge police Captain Matsobane Masela, the incidents of arson were allegedly sparked by the ex-boyfriend’s jealousy. He has since disappeared.
“A fight between the two ex-lovers led to the ex-boyfriend arriving at 4am with petrol, breaking the kitchen window, pouring petrol into the house before allegedly setting it alight. The ex-girlfriend managed to get out and run to safety after [fleeing] the house through a window,” said Masela.
“[The ex-girlfriend’s] mother said her daughter and two grandchildren are nursing injuries at Tembisa Hospital and most of her furniture and appliances have been burned to ashes including a fridge, television, bed, wardrobe and couches.”
The value of the damage is estimated at R15 000.
“In anger, the family allegedly burned down the house belonging to the ex-boyfriend’s brother. Damages are estimated to be R10 000.”
The police are investigating two cases of arson and have said that they will soon be making arrests.
The police have also asked the community to stop using anger and alcohol to resolve their problems.
