DotAfrica set for Mount Kilimanjaro

MIDRAND – Registry Africa has launched a new African domain called dotafrica (.africa).

Registry Africa launched a new domain in South Africa on 8 November known as DotAfrica (.africa) which is aimed at encouraging Africans to have their own identity and branding, even in the information communications technology (ICT) sector.

The domain was recently launched at Coza House in Corporate Park in Midrand, by a panel consisting of Lucky Masilela, the chief executive officer of Registry Africa, well-known mountaineer Deshun Deysel and ambassador Unathi Msengana.

Masilela was recently recognised as the African ICT champion by the African ICT Alliance (Aficta) on the eve of their fifth summit which took place in Abuja, Nigeria from 7 to 9 November.

Deysel is a leading female mountaineer with a 15-year career as a high altitude mountaineer. She has been on 14 major expeditions on five continents. In 1996 she made history by being part of the first group of South Africans to plant the new democratic flag on the top of Mount Everest.

An unprecedented roadshow will make its way through the African continent to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia to launch the new DotAfrica (.africa) geographic top-level domain for the people of Africa.

The regions which will form part of the roadshow, representing the African Union (AU) member states, will include east, west, north and southern Africa.

A highlight of the journey will be the Mount Kilimanjaro summit attempt by the DotAfrica team who will be proudly carrying the DotAfrica flag.

“Just as the eventual commercial launch of DotAfrica was an example of Africans overcoming enormous odds in the quest to better their lives through a unique online identity, so too will the pan-African trek by the team. This roadshow will again illustrate that nothing stands in the way of a united Africa” said Masilela

Msengana said she was very excited to be a part of this domain and also be a part of the team which will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro soon.

“I believe Africa has a lot to offer, and being involved in making history and changing the future of Africa is only a privilege,” said Msengana. She encouraged more and more people to use the new domain and ensure that African products are a success.

“We are extremely grateful to the AU Commission for its unwavering support throughout this long journey that began as far back as the OR Tambo and Abuja declarations where it was resolved to use information technology to ensure the development of Africa. It is now time to create the next chapter in the story as the general public begins contributing to Africa’s development each time they register the domain name,” concluded Masilela.
