Summerhill Preparatory School children participated in the National Eisteddfod of South Africa (NEA).
The children showcased various forms of art including solo performances, poetry and choral verses during the two-day festivities.
They performed Gauteng Thunderstorm written by Renate Knott in collaboration with Gugu Ngcoba.
Grade 2s and 5s presented an effective audiovisual performance where they snapped their fingers and swayed their way around the softer and louder words and lines of IsiZulu, English and Afrikaans.
“Besides being awarded a prize for being a winner in the Grade 5 choral verse category, the end result was that they brought home the prestigious ambassadors award for being among the top 3 per cent of performers of all the 11 000 entries performed before the NEA adjudicators this year,” said Teressa Oates from the school.
The Grade 2 class was trained and supported by Nandi Robinson and the adjudicator’s enjoyed the usage of props and said the youngsters offered a good balance between individual and group speech combined with whispering and well-focused eyes.
Under the guidance and training of Preya Pillay, the Grade 5 class walked off with a medal award and gold certificate for choral verse and poetry.
“The adjudicator commended the verse as an excellent choice which gave the group lots to work with and allowed them to keep the attention of the audience,” said Oates.
