It’s once again that time of year where matrics sit down for what is arguably the biggest test of their high school careers – final examinations.
Matrics’ stress is heightened by them having to assess which university or college they should pursue further studies within, according to Carol Crosley, registrar at the Wits University.
Crosley said systems are, however, in place to assist students in making informed decisions in terms of which institution(s) to consider. “Obviously we encourage prospective students to do their own research, especially now that all institutions have active websites,” Crosley said.
“Many universities also have information and hold open days during the course of the year, but for matrics right now, I would refer them to our university career planner to assist them in making the correct [study] choices. E-services offered by the university is precisely there to help prospective students with not only choosing the right university, but choosing the right course.”
Applicants should take the following criteria into consideration when selecting a university to further their studies:
- Matrics should research the offerings at the different institutions and ensure that they apply at the institutions that offers the relevant qualification
- It is recommended that matrics research the courses they are interested in to familiarise themselves with this and what will be required of them. They are also encouraged to job shadow in the course of their Grade 11 and 12 years
- Matrics should find out what they would like to get out of university from an academic perspective as well as a holistic point of view. In other words, do they wish to stay in residence, pursue sporting activities, etc?
- Can they afford the tuition, and if not, they should source funding via bursaries and scholarships
- Matrics should research what the entry requirements are for the various qualifications and ensure their marks are up to standard, bearing in mind that acceptance is based on achievement and not entry requirements
- They should take into account the ranking and reputation of the institution. For instance, is the institution recognised internationally or not?
- Matrics should also consider their employability once the qualification has been completed before selecting a qualification.
