Police investigate school robbery

MIDRAND – Police are calling on the community for information about the robbery that took place at Eqinisweni Secondary School.

Ivory Park police are appealing for information after a brazen robbery at the Eqinisweni Secondary School in Ivory Park’s Extension Two on 26 October.

Two security officers, who were on duty, were tied up with shoelaces by eight heavily armed men. Their night of terror began when an officer who was manning the guard room was confronted by the gang at about 1am and then escorted to a classroom where the other guard was.

While one of the suspects stayed behind to keep an eye on the guards, the other seven allegedly ransacked the school property.

“During the robbery, about 66 computers and laptops belonging to the school were taken. The robbers gained entry to all of the affected offices by [allegedly] cutting the locks. The office of the school principal, the two vice principals, the staff rooms and the computer room were not spared during the robbery that lasted about three hours,” said Ivory Park police spokesperson Captain Bernard Matimulane.

The robbers ended their night of looting by allegedly taking money from the two security officers as well as a cellphone belonging to one of the officers.

The suspects fled the scene in a Toyota Quantum, and two sedans, which they used to carry the stolen property. Further information on the vehicles was not available.

Ivory Park Police station commander Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, expressed his shock about the robbery. He said, “The fact that the future of so many pupils will be negatively affected should be enough to compel anyone with information to come forward, to assist the police in bringing those responsible to justice.”

Ngcobo appealed to the community to refrain from buying stolen property and to report anyone selling property suspected to have been stolen to the police.

The Ivory Park police are investigating a case of robbery.
