Dussehra Festival in Midrand is a hit

MIDRAND – The High Commissioner of India in South Africa, Ruchira Kamboj attended the function, with Raj Kumar Sharma, president of UBHAS receiving her on arrival.

 

This year, the Dussehra Festival was celebrated at Sagewood School in Noordwyk.

Dussehra and Diwali are two festivals celebrated in countries around the world including India, Mauritius, Fiji, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Kenya, UK, Australia and South Africa.

The evening contained many Bollywood music and dance, martial arts performance and RAM Lila – a theatrical interpretation of the epic.

The festival was celebrated in true Indian style with religion and beliefs bringing together many families and friends.

UBHAS is a non-profit, charitable organisation and was established in South Africa nine years ago. Its objectives are to provide support and monthly charity functions and welfare programmes to uplift the underprivileged segment of South African society and to spread the word of Hinduism and to support Hindi initiatives and culture in South Africa.

The organisation has successfully organised this festival for many years and the number of attendees for this festival has increased from about 250 in the first year to about 1 000 this year. The quality and significance of this event has become an Indian brand in itself in South Africa.

Diwali in South Africa will be celebrated on 18 and 19 October.
