MIDRAND – An Ivory Park suspect who faces charges of murder and attempted murder is expected to apply for bail.

An Ivory Park man was expected to apply for bail in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court on 15 September after he was arrested for murder, but the case was postponed to 3 October.

The suspect (23) is accused of murdering a man whom he suspected of having a relationship with his girlfriend.

“The suspect was arrested two months ago for a crime he had allegedly committed in February. This follows an intensive tracing investigation by the Ivory Park detectives, which led them to Sebokeng, in the Vaal area, where the suspect fled to after the alleged murder and attempted murder on three other people,” said Ivory Park police spokesperson Captain Bernard Matimulane.

“In February, the suspect found his girlfriend in the company of her male friend whom the suspect allegedly stabbed with a pair of scissors later on. The victim succumbed to his injuries five days later in hospital. The suspect went back to his girlfriend’s place three days after the first stabbing incident and found her in the company of other people. In a fit of rage, he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend and her friends with a pair of scissors, and fled Ivory Park.”

The police want to oppose bail because they believe the suspect is a danger to society and himself. The suspect is facing a charge of murder and three of attempted murder.

Ivory Park Police Station commander Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, said it will be in the best interests of the community for suspects accused of murder to be kept out of circulation as their presence may stir up animosity in the community.

“The fact that it took us months to bring him to account speaks volumes about his ability to evade justice and [his] potential to abscond,” said Ngcobo.
