Ivory Park stokvel group robbed at gunpoint

MIDRAND – Ivory Park Police Station commander warns stokvels against keeping large amounts of money following an armed robbery.

A stokvel group was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money on 10 September in Ivory Park Ext 2.

It is alleged that four armed men barged into a shack belonging to a stokvel member which is also where they meet. It’s claimed that the group immediately demanded the money.

“One of the robbers is alleged to have grabbed the male member of the group and threatened his life before they were given the money and also went on to steal their cellphones before fleeing the scene,” said Ivory Park police spokesperson Captain Bernard Matimulane.

Station Commander of the Ivory Park Police Station Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, is calling on stokvels, or any groups whose activities revolve around the collection of monies, to be careful on how they collect and where they meet, as robberies are never far off.

31 arrests in three days by Midrand police

“A case of robbery has been opened and the police are calling on any person with information to come forward, but the possibility of this robbery being an inside job cannot be ruled out and we are prepared to follow all the leads,” said Matimulane.

“As the festive season looms we are likely to see an escalation in these kinds of robberies and we strongly encourage groups to speak to financial institutions on the best and safe way of moving money and conducting transactions,” said Ngcobo.
