Ivory Park taxi driver arrested for alleged rape

MIDRAND – Ivory Park taxi driver arrested for the alleged rape and robbery of a woman.

The Station Commander of the Ivory Park Police Station has welcomed the arrest on 7 September of a 37-year-old taxi driver from Ivory Park for the alleged rape of a woman on 3 September.

Station commander Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo said, “the police take any form of violence against women seriously, and we intend investigating if there is any link [to] the suspect in any of the cases reported at Ivory Park Police [Station], especially those in which victims were raped under similar circumstances.”

The victim apparently saw the suspect driving another car, different from the one he allegedly raped her in. She was quick to take the registration number of the vehicle and took the details to the local taxi rank officials who then contacted the driver.

The police were immediately called and during questioning, the suspect admitted to the crime. Police officers also found the victim’s phone at the suspects house.

31 arrests in three days by Midrand police

“On the night of the alleged rape the victim stopped a car, thinking it was a local taxi but instead of taking her to her destination, the suspect stopped at an isolated spot, locked the doors and took out a screwdriver which he used to threaten the victim into complying with his demands which included taking off her clothes and surrendering her cell phone,” said Ivory Park police spokesperson Captain Bernard Matimulane.

“The victim’s attention to detail has assisted us tremendously in bringing the alleged rapist and robber to book. The fact that she was able to memorise his [face] despite the horrors she was subjected to, deserves to be complimented, said Ngcobo.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court soon to face charges of rape and robbery.
