Community to be aware of vehicle theft and tow scam

MIDRAND – Midrand Police Station has warned residents against a fraudster pretending to have recovered their stolen vehicle and requiring money to tow their vehicle.

Midrand police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmakgomo Semono has sent out a warning to members of the community regarding a fraud scam.

“Numerous people who have reported cases of vehicle theft at the station have received a call from a fraudster pretending to be police official,” said Semono. He added that the caller claims to have found the victim’s vehicle on the South African border and demands money to tow the vehicle back to them.

Semono warned that the police never require a victim to pay a certain fee to have their vehicle towed to the nearest vehicle pound unit. He urged community members to be informed about police procedures to avoid being conned by fraudsters.
