Station commander pleased with community help in Ivory Park

MIDRAND – Ivory Park Police Station commander pleased with the role played by the community in the arrest of a 24-year-old man.

 

Ivory Park Police Station commander Brigadier David Ngcobo, is extremely pleased with the pivotal role the local community played in the arrest of a 24-year-old man who allegedly had an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in his possession on 10 August.

“The local informal settlement community caught a suspect after he was seen [with] a firearm. The community confronted him about the ownership of the firearm, which he allegedly failed to provide proof of in the form of a licence. Members of the community called the police, leading to the suspect’s arrest,” said Ivory Park police spokesperson Captain Bernard Matimulane.

The suspect apparently comes from Tsenelong in Tembisa and the reason why he was in Ivory Park informal settlement not known.

Police confirmed that the owner of the confiscated firearm reported it missing about a month ago after he was robbed and stabbed near the Swazi Inn Market in Ivory Park Ext 3 while he was on his way home from work.

“On behalf of my team at Ivory Park police, we are so grateful that the community is responding positively to our calls of working together against crime through being the ears, the eyes and supporters of police as they discharge their constitutional mandate and obligation,” said Ngcobo.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court on 14 August.

In the meantime, the police continue their investigation to find out whether or not the suspect was involved in the robbery and stabbing of the firearm owner.
