Stingers run out of venom
MIDRAND – Tshuma Stingers defeated 28–13 by Southern Knights.
Midrand’s Tshuma Stingers faced Southern Knights in an epic clash of the titans on 22 April in the Golden Lions Rugby Union Senior Grand Challenge.
But the sting was taken out of the Stingers in a 13–28 defeat.
Stingers took the early lead via a penalty but the Knights were quick to respond with one of their own to level the score at 3–3.
The Knights were punished for a mistake 22 minutes into the game when Stingers winger Collette Chawatama received the ball from a turnover and ran all of 70m to score the opening try of the day. The score was converted by Lwando Yiliwe to put the Stingers in the lead 10–3.
The Knights hit back with an unconverted try by winger Morgan De Koker and then took the lead via a penalty to go into the break 11–10 up.
The Knights extended their lead to four points early in the second half via a penalty but that was quickly cancelled out with a 3-pointer from the boot of Lwando Yiliwe to make it 14–13 to the Knights.
The Knights then stepped up their scrum dominance and were rewarded with two converted tries by replacement wing Evan Williams and Lorenzo Malgas for the 15-point win. The win sees the Knights go top of the log.
“It was an extremely physical encounter,” said Ndumiso Tshuma, CEO of Tshuma Stingers. “The Stingers take this defeat on the chin, knowing that they are worthy opponents in the Golden Lions Rugby Union Senior Grand Challenge. “Knights are the team to beat on our way to lifting the trophy.”
