Dumped newborn found by community member in Ebony Park

MIDRAND – Ivory Park police are searching for the mother of an abandoned newborn.

Ivory Park Police Station has opened a case of child neglect after a newborn was found wrapped in a plastic bag in an open veld in Ivory Park on 12 July.

The abandoned baby was found by a community member who then contacted police.

“The police rushed to the scene and found the newborn still alive and immediately transported the infant to Tembisa Hospital for a check-up and treatment,” said the spokesperson for the station, Captain Bernard Matimulane.

Station Commander, Brigadier David Ngcobo said he was shocked by this case and has appealed to anyone with information to assist the police to track the mother of the newborn.

“Regardless of the circumstance of the parent there is no justification for anyone to subject an innocent life to such conditions. Gauteng has many homes for the abandoned kids and the mother could have used one of those if she was in some form of difficulties,” said Ngcobo.

The case has been handed over to the police’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.

Details: Ivory Park Police Station 011 990 9618.
