UPDATE: Warning reports of another possible #TaxiStrike emerge

JOBURG - Reports of another #TaxiStrike emerge and police were reportedly on scene near Allandale Road and along the R21 in the early hours of this morning.

UPDATE, 9.30am:

Midrand Reporter has contacted the Secretary General of the Gauteng Provincial Meter Taxi Council, the body in which the Gauteng Metered Taxi Operators Committee falls under. Secretary General Ndou said there will be no march taking place today (22 June) because the application for the march was not approved by the City of Johannesburg.

“Their application was not successful because they only applied yesterday and the City says an application should be no later than 7 days to march day because motorists need to be warned, and metro police need to be dispatched,” Ndou explained. There will be no march and no press conference. He said they will reapply for another date.

Intitial report, 8.40am:

According to Kempton Express, reports of protest action on the N1 north near Allandale Road had been emerging on Twitter this morning.

Management of OR Tambo International Airport issued a statement saying they were aware of these unconfirmed reports of possible protest action that may disrupt access to and from the airport, reports Kempton Express.

“Airport management understands that some of the protestors will gather in the vicinity of OR Tambo International Airport and other identified venues, and by 9.00am proceed to the Gautrain Management Agency Head Office in Midrand,” as reported in the statement issued by the airport management.

Routes that may be affected include the R21 Engen One Stop; R21 at Olifantsfontein Road; R21-R24 split; R24 at Barbara Road; N3 at Gillooly’s interchange; Eastgate Mall and East Rand Mall, says Kempton Express.

The Midrand Reporter will provide further details.
