Update: Van Heerden Road 60 per cent complete

MIDRAND – Residents of Halfway Gardens are left with great inconvenience following the incomplete construction of Van Heerden Road, which also leads to a school.

The spokesperson for Johannesburg Roads Agency Bertha Peters-Scheepers said the agency was aware of the current incomplete road and was working on remedying the situation. However, she did not mention anything about a strike.

She said that contributing factors to the delay included wet weather conditions and unsatisfactory road quality tests which resulted in additional testing of materials to proceed to the next level. “This had a knock-on effect on excavations which required additional time to resolve issues. Activity on the road from the 29 March until 3 April was suspended due to the contractor being on pay weekend. However, the road remained accessible during this period,” she said.

She also revealed that the road was presently 60 per cent complete and due to the interruption with public holidays, work on site will resume on 21 April.

The incomplete construction work on Van Heerden Road has left Halfway Gardens residents inconvenienced for more than a month.

The road that leads to Halfway House Primary School has been under rehabilitation since late February. According to resident Abdool Vajeth, work has not taken place for almost a month following strikes by construction workers.

Van Heerden Road is closed due to incomplete work.

“We went from a horrible road full of potholes to a horrible dirt road. Now, we have about 500 people being inconvenienced with steep sloping driveways and dust on their cars every day,” said Vajeth.
