Midrand resident and Tembisa security officer arrested for OR Tambo International Airport heist

MIDRAND – Two of the five arrested men in the OR Tambo International Airport heist reside in Midrand. Read the full story here.

 

A man from Midrand and a security guard from Tembisa were among the five men recently arrested for the OR Tambo International Airport heist which took place on 7 March.

One of the accused, Thando Sonqishe, is the owner of a Lamborghini and lives in an elite estates in Midrand, while another, France Manaka is a security guard who lives in Tembisa.

Sonqishe and Manaka were arrested along with Job Mnisi, Tshepo Thokune and Prince Dube on the weekend of 17 and 18 March.

They all appeared before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on 20 March facing a charge of armed robbery. Their case was postponed to 28 and 29 March for their bail applications.

Among the five arrested was allegedly a member of the police force.

Acting national commissioner, Lieutenant General Khomotso Phahlane congratulated those involved in the arrests for their hard work.

“A combination of intelligence gathering and old-fashioned detective work, their efforts have culminated in the recent arrests and court appearances of those allegedly involved in the OR Tambo International Airport robbery, which we view as a serious security breach at a national key point,” Phahlane added.

Evidence seized by the police during the course of the investigation will be presented in court during the trial. Investigations are continuing and information gathered, including the roles allegedly played by the accused individuals, will also be presented.
