Sundowns prepare for nine-day European adventure

JOBURG – Sundowns are the new champions of the 2016/17 MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC) and will depart for the Netherlands on 17 March as part of the prize for winning the championship.

The champions of the MDC – also known as the Premier Soccer League Reserve League, Mamelodi Sundowns – are gearing up for a nine-day European adventure.

The Brazilians will jet off for the Netherlands on 17 March, whose trip forms the main prize awarded to them for clinching the challenge. They were third-time lucky after nearly clinching it for the past two years since the inception of the challenge.

The inaugural winners of the 2014/15 challenge were the AmaTuks, (the University of Pretoria), who now ply their trade in the National First Division after being relegated last year. The following year was the turn of Golden Arrows, who narrowly beat the current champions to bag the trip.

The Sundowns team, led by head coach, David Notoane and skipper, Motjeka Madisha return home from the Netherlands on 26 March. During their stay in the Netherlands, ‘Bafana Ba Style’ (as Sundowns are affectionately known to their fans), will participate in the MultiChoice International Challenge, a one-day tournament involving three other teams from around the world, those being Excelsior Rotterdam (Netherlands), KAA Gent (Belgium) and Ichifuna FC (Japan).

The champions will also play friendly matches against Beloften Eredivisie sides PEC Zwolle and AZ Alkmaar, before spending some time at the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) headquarters in Utrecht, training under the watchful eye of Dutch legends, Frank De Boer and Aaron Winter.
