Denel awards its top academic achievers at Midrand Covention Centre

MIDRAND – A total of 74 distinctions were achieved across the spectrum of engineering disciplines including mechanical, electronic, electrical and aeronautical.

Denel, the state-owned aerospace and defence technology conglomerate, awarded its top academic achievers from the corporation’s schools outreach programme, its bursary scheme and Denel Technical Academy, at the Midrand Conference Centre.

The Top Young Achiever Awards is a key event within the Denel group’s corporate social investment calendar and honours young people from historically disadvantaged backgrounds who receive training and financial support from the corporation. A total of 74 distinctions were achieved across the spectrum of engineering disciplines including mechanical, electronic, electrical and aeronautical.

The programme’s extra tuition for maths, science, life sciences and English supported 450 children in grades 10 to 12 in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, the North West, Eastern Cape and Gauteng last year.

“Our bursary holders were, once again, among the top achievers nationally in the fields of science, engineering and technology. We pride ourselves on Denel’s ability to invest in South Africa’s youth, particularly those from historically disadvantaged backgrounds,” said Denel acting CEO, Zwelakhe Ntshepe.

The academy offers tertiary training to more than 400 students who then continue to gain practical experience in the industry before returning to Denel to qualify as apprentices.
