Sundowns player robbed in Midrand

MIDRAND - sundowns soccer star robbed at gunpoint at one of the garages in Kyalami

Mamelodi Sundowns player Khama Billiat became the victim of crime when four armed men robbed the Engen garage at Dytchley Road in Kyalami in the wee hours of 28 February.

According to the police, Billiat went to the convenience store at the garage to buy bread with his friend when one of the four armed robbers entered the store and ordered them to lie on the floor.

Gauteng police spokesperson, Captain Kay Makhubela, said the soccer star was robbed of his belongings including a watch. “He was caught in between a robbery between 1am and 2am and found himself there at the wrong time. We are still investigating the matter and as soon as we have acquired all information from him, we will know what other items were robbed from him,” he said.

Khama Billiat was robbed at this Engen garage at about 1am on February 28.

Makhubela further revealed that the robbers, who were armed with rifles and wearing balaclavas and gloves, also took an undisclosed amount of money from the garage till. “The other three suspects who were outside ordered the petrol attendants to fill up their getaway cars. It appears they were using more than one car but more information would be established as the investigation continues.”

The owner of the garage, Benny Eichner, refused to give details about the incident. “I don’t want to make a big thing out of it and I don’t think it would be good publicity for us,” he said.

Spokesperson for Mamelodi Sundowns, Thulani Thuswa, said Billiat escaped the robbery uninjured. “The player is fine. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time. They took his watch and wallet but he is fine,” he said.
