Low-cost housing coming soon to Rabie Ridge open field

MIDRAND – The police and City of Johannesburg MMC and regional director gathered together to address the land and housing issue in Rabie Ridge.

The South African Police Service called a joint meeting of community leaders on 14 February, which was also attended by Housing MMC, Muzi Ntuli to resolve the land conflicts which have flared up in Rabie Ridge.

The meeting, held at the Rabie Ridge Police Station, was sparked by an incident which took place in the beginning of February whereby a group of people attempted to illegally invade open land in Rabie Ridge.

Ntuli said he was surprised to see the community demonstrations as he was unaware that the people were angry, as he believed the housing project was on course.

The executive director of housing at the City of Johannesburg, Patrick Phophi, confirmed that the budget for housing development in Rabie Ridge has been approved.

Regional director, Abigale Ndlovu proposed a submission of the waiting list from the community, which would be compared with the City of Johannesburg’s housing list.

The Rabie Ridge Police Station corporate communications officer, Mofana Matsobane Masela, said the next meeting will be held on 9 March at 10am at the Rabie Ridge Police Station.

Community leader, Thabo Maebjeng from Mayibuye, said the Rabie Ridge open space was a target for criminal activities because people risk their lives when they walk through the tall grass. “The community will be safe and the police can concentrate on other hotspots once the low-cost housing project is underway because the open field space will no longer be there,” he said.
