Joelle brings out the big Gunz

JOBURG – The city's singer and rapper, Joelle, tells us about her journey into the limelight.

The Gunz come out as a Joburg resident, Joelle, cements her entrance into the South African music scene.

The Democratic Republic of Congo native was relocated to South Africa when she was just a baby and, after being enrolled in a local school, made sure to take part in all the singing and dancing activities that she could.

“I started performing [as a singer and rapper] in high school and the reception was great. I have yet to perform professionally and I am intending to do so, next year,” said Joelle.

Now having grown and evolved from her childhood singing, she is taking on a challenge by entering a genre currently dominated by the likes of Rouge, Nomuzi Mabena and Nadia Nakai, among others. “I perform hip-hop, which genre influences me to do more with my sound – it takes me [to] another level. I love Aliyah’s sound because she broke a lot of musical boundaries.

“Music means expressing yourself in different ways and, on so many levels, creating or re-inventing yourself – being free.”

The hip-hop musician is currently promoting her very first single and she’s loving the responses. “I’m currently working on my single, Gunz. I am new in the market and the reception… has been great. The single is on high rotation on radio stations like 5FM. The video for the single will follow on soon because it was shot a few weeks ago.”

With her first track officially released to the world, she has the future in mind – and it looks exciting. She’s planning to introduce her unique style of rap to the public. “In 2017, I plan to put the country on the map. How I plan to do that, firstly, is by using the sound that I’m doing [because] it’s not being done by any [other] female rapper. I will be the first to showcase this sound in and around the country.”

Keep a look out for this interesting take on the world of rap.
