Tree-planting at police station

MIDRAND – Midrand Police Station receives seven trees from the Lions Club of Midrand as part of Arbour Month.

Members of Lions Club International, Midrand district, planted seven trees at the Midrand Police Station on 1 October as part of September’s Arbour Month celebration.

The trees were supplied by Joburg Parks and Zoo and the planting was organised by Democratic Alliance councillor, Candice James.

It was not the first time the club planted trees at the station after doing so eight years ago.

The Midrand club’s president, Meredith Wilter-Sturges, said the club had been operating for 50 years in South Africa and was established in 1987 in Midrand. The Midrand branch now has 27 members.

Wilter-Sturges said the club was not a charity but was a service-based organisation and depended largely on volunteers to assist in its activities. Furthermore, she said the club was focused on serving the community while working hand-in-hand with the police and community associations.

The club mostly assists the blind, elderly, poverty-stricken individuals and families and helps maintain a healthy environment which is why tree-planting is important to the club.

The Lions Club also works with various organisations such as the ABC Day Care Centre, Yenzani Ophanage and Novalis House.

Wilter-Sturges said it was now the responsibility of members of the police station to water the trees and ensure their growth.
