Meet some of the best sports pupils in Midrand

MIDRAND – Some of the finest sports pupils that Midrand schools have.

 

School pupils from Midrand have a passion for sport and Midrand Reporter got in touch with some of them.

Halfway House Primary School’s athletes and siblings Akhelwe and Hlelelwe Msibi are very dedicated to athletics and cross-country. The school’s cross-country organiser, Jennifer Phokane said, “The two have also represented the school right up to the provincial level in athletics and cross-country for the past couple of years and have won medals. With proper training, they will be our future Wade van Nierkerk and Caster Semenya, their inspirations.”

Msibi (10) said, “My love for cross-country started in 2015. My goal is to one day win a gold medal in the Olympics.”

Hlelelwe (12) said, “I like cross-country as it is fun and gives me an opportunity to be someone one day.”

A teacher at Beaulieu Preparatory School, Tessa Hughes said a Grade 7 pupil, Micayla Powell, is the horse riding captain and one of the horse riders. She added, “The school is proud to state [the school] has performed exceptionally well in the Equestrian Schools’ League, remaining undefeated for the past 13 years.”

Powell, inspired by a rider Rainer Körber said, “I enjoy riding daily and spending time with my horses as well as the challenge to constantly improve my riding. It is such fun and a wonderful feeling to have a good round in a competition.”

Uviwe Quasha, a soccer player; and Rethabile Rafube, a softball and netball player from Sagewood School are some of the best sports pupils at the school.

Quasha, who is inspired by Ander Herrera, a Manchester United football player said, “When I play the sport, all my worries go away. I’m good at soccer and I like to do the things I’m good at.”

Rafube is inspired by Bongiwe Msomi, South African netball team captain. Mafube said, “I enjoy Netball because I’m good at it and it allows me to interact with different types of people.”
