Joburg is alive with the sound of comedy

NEWTOWN – The Sound of Comedy is coming to Johannesburg.

Until now the pop-up comedy show, Sound of Comedy (Soc), has been hosted at various venues around Pretoria but with great demand, Johannesburg audiences will have a chance to share in the excitement.

Thato Molope started Soc after he dropped out of University of Pretoria’s law school to do stand-up comedy. When he discovered there weren’t many places where he could do so, he started his own.

“I had never set foot in a comedy club until I put together my first show, which was with Whackhead Simpson and Tony D King at the beginning of 2014. I did a couple more and quickly realised that I would have to learn the industry if I wanted to build a show that was better than what was out there,” Molope explained.

Having explored many comedy clubs to find some great comedic talent and familiarise himself with the scene, he said, “I’ve been to most of the comedy clubs and once-off shows, and I have to say one of my favourites is Poppy’s in Melville, purely because it allows up-and-coming comics to get some much-needed stage time.”

Soc has been hosted at various venues around Pretoria including Cofi in Hatfield and Rhapsody’s in Sunnyside, and has secured gigs in Johannesburg including the official Joburg launch at Cappello Newtown, News Café at UJ Campus Square and News Café Wits Campus.

With anticipation for the launch event building each day, he said, “It’s been part of our vision ever since we started so we are looking forward to seeing the hard work pay off.”

Even the though the launch in Joburg has not yet taken place, he is excited for the future prospects of the event. “[With Soc] being a mobile show, I would have to say [that we’d like to pop up at] as many as possible. Our goal is to bring the entertainment to the people and create as many platforms for artists to showcase their talents.”

The comedy entrepreneur – following in the glamorous footsteps of Goliath and Goliath – looks forward to hosting the pop-up comedy nights and getting a look at the underground talent.

The Joburg launch, set for 22 September at Cappello in Newtown, will feature comedy kings Eric Jansen, TT, Mumz, Lazola Gola and Robby Collins.
