Thusga talks about his music

MIDRAND – Midrand's motwaka artist, Thusga, is taking off.

 

Midrand-based artist Mthusi Somoro, aka Thusga, spoke to Midrand Reporter about his music and the challenges in the music industry.

The 25-year-old’s love for hip-hop was initiated in the late 90s when he was exposed to this genre of music by his late uncle. Thusga listened to artists such as The Notorious Big, Tupac, and local artists Twistyle and Bafixile who influenced his style of hip-hop called motswako, which is rapping in Tswana. Thusga’s first hip-hop cassette was that of Snoop Dogg’s which was given to him by his father at age 10.

His single Me, Myself and I is about his journey as an independent artist signed to his own label Yore Media.

He said, “With the help of DJ Lemonka, I recorded this first single Me Myself and I featuring Kaygism [KG] from the legendary motswako group called Morafe. My second single, I Guess You Never Know, features BET nominated, South African Music Awards and Metro FM Music award-winning hip-hop artist, Emtee.”

A music video directed by Kyle White was shot for the single and made its debut on Channel O’s Turn Up music show. It has been playlisted by MTV and it is also playing on Kuze Kose TV on SABC 1.

Thusga currently runs and is signed to his own multi-media company that focuses on managing, marketing and promoting its artists, events, productions and publishing.

This multi-tasking artist and entrepreneur, who has completed his studies in sound engineering, is currently working on his second single with the assistance of DJ Lemonka.

Giving advice to anyone who might want to make a career in music but thinks it is impossible he said, “Never give up if it is your dream. Do not copy everyone, find your own style and sound and work hard at it. Your music is your brand.”
