MIDRAND – A man will appear at Midrand Magistrates' Court on domestic violence charges.

After an argument went from verbal to physical, a man is due to appear in court for hitting his girlfriend over the head with a bottle.

A neighbour came to the young woman’s rescue at their residence in Kyalami and called Midrand police. After arriving on the scene, the police officers tended to the woman and arrested her boyfriend.

Constable Matome Tlamela, head of communication at Midrand Police Station said, “The woman did receive medical attention and the suspect will appear in Midrand Magistrates’ Court soon.”

Tlamela also said that victims of domestic abuse ought know their options.

Victims of abuse must:

  • Always carry a list of emergency numbers.
  • Make sure that the people you usually visit have a copy of the protection order and/or warrant of arrest.
  • Put some money in a safe place so that the victim can take a taxi or bus in case of an emergency.
  • Have an extra set of keys for the house or vehicle.
  • If possible, have a set of clothes packed in a bag in a safe place.
