New local music for SA

JOHANNESBURG - Learn all about SA music's 'new guy'.

South African music-lovers be warned: there’s someone new in the industry and he’s here to take over the music scene.

Thabo Makalima, who now goes by the name Rizzla, has been in the music game professionally since 2005 and has worked with the likes of hot-on-the-scene rapper and founder of Ambitious Entertainment, Emtee, and Feezy from Native Rhythms.

The Midrand-based resident who grew up in Soweto discovered his passion for music at the age of 18 and kicked off his career at university when he started participating in the hip-hop battle sessions, following which a number of great things happened to start his career in music.

“Around 2006, I met all the right people and I got to work with a lot of people like Pro Kid,” Rizzla said.

Later he met Emtee and they cooked up loads of songs, one of the popular singles being Ama Lanes.

“I’m now at the point where I have my own record label and I manage a few artists, but now I’m focusing on Rizzla to get my music out and the record label out so that we can accommodate more artists,” he explained.

Rizzla’s latest offering titled Juluka was produced by Rough, a producer at Ambitious Entertainment.

“I hope that the masses will like this single as it relates to young and old generations,” he expressed.

This hip-hop and RnB artist is not just the founder of SQS Records, but also has a professional qualification behind his name.

“I am someone who loves music very much, but I had to cover my back in life so I got educated. I got a degree and honours in computer science at UJ,” he said.

The musician is well on his way to releasing his new mixtape, M.I.A (Missing In Action), and hopes that a number of singles will make the top 50 places on popular American charts. He wants to be able to compete with the likes of rap group, Young Money, among others, and to take over the music world with positivity.

“My music is always written with positive words and it’s about what’s going on in life. People want to relate the music to what they’re going through, so I want to sing about the experiences that make them happy,” he concluded.

Working on taking his music to the 2016 South African Hip-Hop Awards, this aspiring entertainer is fast becoming a name in the world of music.
