SA rapper’s album goes platinum

JOBURG - Find out which former St Johns College pupil has a platinum selling album

AKA became the first South African English rapper to have a platinum-selling album with the release of his album titled Levels which has gained him a strong following across Africa and has opened up doors for him in the US and the UK.

Kiernan Forbes, a former St John’s College pupil and popularly known as AKA, has become one of the top musicians in the country over the past five years.

Last year, AKA dominated the South African radio airways as the most played South African artist with only two new single releases towards the end of the year.

AKA received, and continues to receive, award nominations and recognition across the globe for singles released from his album.

Going on two years without a new album is unheard of in South Africa for an artist to be able to keep up momentum, let alone dominate the music scene and this is verification of the talent, relevance and brand power of AKA.

This comes hot on the heels of AKA’s sold-out Supa Mega Show which was hosted at Zone 6 in Soweto on 1 May.

The show was the first of its kind by AKA and featured a line-up of South Africa’s hip-hop heavyweights such as Da LES, Yanga, MaE, Kwesta, Maggz and rising hip-hop sensation, Big Star.
