Sandwiches for hungry tummies

WATERFALL – Homes around Midrand are beneficiaries of Premier Foods' sandwich challenge.

Botshabelo Babies Home in Blue Hills is one of the beneficiaries of sandwiches from the Premier Foods sandwich challenge.

Employees involved in Premier Foods Midrand’s bakery operation had their hands full on 15 April, making a total of 6 819 sandwiches for homes around the area.

They were competing against their counterparts in Temba, Aeroton and Pretoria. Although they came last, the sandwiches the employees made were donated to the neediest in their community and filled many hungry tummies.

“They were a great relief. We were given 200 sandwiches and used some while freezing others for the coming week,” said Makopano Mutluatse from the babies’ home.

Mutluatse added that initiatives such as these were ideal, as they allowed homes to concentrate on other aspects such as school fees. “We’re able to invest daily into the lives of children and see them transform. Donations of food are so perfect as they directly help our children and help us to save costs to put into other areas of great need such as school fee sponsorships for children from underprivileged families,” said Mutloatse.

Corporate communications officer, Nodumo Novuka, said the sandwich challenge allowed their staff to interact with each other. “It is also a form of team building as everyone is involved – even our chief executive officer, Tjaart Kruger,” said Novuka.

The group also gave sandwiches to New Jerusalem Children’s Home in President Park.

“We care about our corporate social responsibility projects and we like getting involved as much as possible,”Novuka concluded.
