A love for off-road cross-country races

JOBURG - Two residents talk about a sport they love.

Moto-Netix team driver Werner Mostert from Glenferness in Kyalami, and navigator Henno du Plooy from Pretoria, recently won their class in one of the toughest off-road cross-country races.

The pair finished fourth overall at the West Coast Baja Race held in Port Nolloth on the North West Coast.

The event was a build-up and qualifier for RaciAmageza that will be held in November which will run over seven days and would cover 5 000km which is very similar to the Dakar rally where you can participate with either a two-wheeler, quad bike or a side-by-side.

Mostert said, “The best part of off-road cross-country racing is the fact that you get to race in an environment where you have not driven before and do not even know where the next turn might be.You always have to be alert and on top of your game as the terrain that you race on is unknown to you.”

He added that the race is a constant adrenaline rush, you have to trust your instinct and your navigator’s judgment, the navigator also needs to warn you of all the dangers like trees, fences, rocks and ditches.

“We were very fortunate to participate in a big event like this and got to see places that one would only read about. What made this successful for us was the great help from all our staff at Moto-Netix for the preparation of the car, our sponsors and our back-up team,” said Mostert.

Du Plooy also spoke about the race, “I have been racing for 14 years, meeting new people and seeing new places makes it worth it.”
