Theatre season productions to honour #FeesMustFall movement

BRAAMFONTEIN – The SA Theatre Season will commemorate the recent student movements through a series or theatre, film and musical performances this week at the Wits Theatre.

The South African Theatre Season is set to return to Johannesburg with a bang this year with an exciting line-up of productions commemorating the recent student movements.

The theatre season, presented by Drama for Life together with the Wits Theatre, Wits School of Arts and the Wits Counselling, Careers and Development Unit, will host various productions centred around a theme of Forgotten Futures, beginning on 6 April.

Benjamin Bell, the SA Theatre Season director, explained the selection of Forgotten Futures as a theme.

“In a fast changing world, where economic, environmental, digital and political forces collide, [we seem to] have forgotten about the people who will determine the shape and nature of the future,” he said.

“With movements like #FeesMustFall and #RhodesMustFall, we are beginning to see young people tackle this problem head-on and ask pertinent questions about the failure of the transformation agenda.”

Bell added that the the theatre would provide a serious platform to unpack, disrupt, discuss, rebuild and evaluate these contemporary youth realities while providing opportunities for meaningful cross-generational dialogue to take place.

This will take the form of live theatre performances, film showings, live music and performance of poetry by some of the country’s emerging young voices within the arts.

Productions will include Nortasuna, brought to life by Lidija Marelic, Thina Sobabili: The Two of Us and While You Weren’t Looking, winner of The Pink Apple Audience Award in Zurich 2015, among others.

The South African Theatre Season Forgotten Futures runs will run until 9 April 2016 at the Wits Theatre.
