Spirited Chiefs are the fall guy of the Nedbank Cup

JOBURG - The million dollar question has finally been answered and Kaizer Chiefs are the fall guy of the Nedbank Cup Soweto Derby after being bumped out by their arch-rivals, Orlando Pirates by 2-0.

Two goals by Pirates’ Zimbabwean striker Tendai Ndoro in the 75th and 80th minutes of the game at the FNB Stadium sealed victory for the Mighty Buccaneers in a cup derby that could have easily gone the other way.

Pirates must count themselves lucky that out of many opportunities they too missed, they managed to bang in two goals that will see them march to the last 16 of the competition.

If, by supposition, the spirited Chiefs team led by their captain, Siphiwe Tshabalala, who cut his teeth in football at Alex United, had been clinical in the face of goal, they could have easily overturned Pirates’ two goal cushion to look like a Sunday picnic.

Amakhosi, as they are popularly known, missed more chances of scoring than their Buccaneer counterparts and their chief striker, Camaldine Abraw was marked men who never saw the ball, let alone have an attempt at goals.

The way Abraw was eclipsed in the game left many scribes wondering why he was not substituted or coach Steve Komphela kept hoping if given a decent pass the striker might perform his usual miracles.

Besides making up for his earlier miss in the first five minutes of the game when he had a one-on-one with Chiefs keeper, Reyaad Pieterse, Ndoro avenged Pirates’ fall in the semifinals of the Telkom Knockout at the hands of Amakhosi.

What is unknown though is whether Ndoro rushed to twitter this time around as well like he did when he single-handedly disposed of Bloemfontein Celtic in their chaotic encounter. In that encounter, Ndoro dashed to twitter and praised his ‘leader’ on his 92nd birthday.

Soon after scoring the two goals, Pirates players were in no hurry anymore as they took the game casual and instead resorted to play to the gallery, showing off their skills on the ball to the amusement of the crowds on the stands.
