Midrand actor takes on two roles in Disney’s Aladdin

NOORDWYK – Noordwyk resident and actor, Andile Maqxaki, will take on the role of Sultan and the Genie in the stage production of Aladdin at the Peoples Theatre from 7 March.

Maqxaki told Midrand Reporter that acting started off as something he did on the side. “In the beginning it was just a hobby, but now acting is my life. I have done theatre and TV work. I enjoy what I do.”

The 31-year-old, who also acted in Shrek and The Little Mermaid, said young people who have the passion for acting have to have a thick skin.

He advised, “It is not an easy career to start off, but once you take part in certain productions and they are a success, then the sky is the limit.”

Maqxaki emphasised that anyone looking to get into acting has to be patient, sharpen their craft and get a good agent.

The production will take place against the backdrop of a set designed by Grant Knottenbelt, with costumes made by Linda Wilson which will capture the Arabian culture in all its splendour.

Other actors in the production include Sean McGrath, Noni Mkhonto, Sibusiso Nhlapo, Sarah Malherbe and Aiden Hyland.

Musical staging and choreography is executed by the multi-award winning Sandy Dyer and music director Raymond Verster, with Keith Smith and Jill Girard as producers.

School times for the show are Mondays to Fridays at 9am and 11am.

Community members can view the show on Saturdays, certain Sundays and public holidays at 10.30am and 2.30pm.
