SA’s first all-female rap crew is born (LISTEN)

JOHANNESBURG – Toya Delazy, the multi-award winning, BET Award nominee, has birthed the first all-female rap crew in South Africa, known as the Klutch Kollective.

It’s reported that Delazy saw the need for an all-female rap crew and recruited three of her University of Durban alumni. Now, the four of them have also just released their debut single, Back To The Roots.

Listen to Klutch Kollective’s Back To The Roots here:

The crew consists of Delazy, DK, Fiah and Genius, all of whom have made an appearance on the South African music scene. DK and Genius already are two of only three females picked to take part in the Vuzu’s The Hustle reality competition last year. Fiah is quickly making a name for herself, already having a number of film roles under her belt, she is the face of Ukhozi FM’s new campaign, and the raspy bad girl voice behind SABCEncore’s hip-hop theme track.

Not only is Delazy the executive producer and producer, she also features in the chorus of the single, which is all about taking hip-hop back to its roots and towards something more conscious.

“It’s a humbling experience to finally see Klutch Kollective come into fruition. I believe SA desperately needs a conscious hip-hop movement and I’m certain the collective voices of women will be able to achieve this,” said Delazy.
