Paddle to a win

MIDRAND - The two-day Klip River race over the weekend of 30 and 31 January was the last river race in Gauteng prior to the Dusi Canoe Marathon in Pietermaritzburg.

The race was an important training opportunity for the Dusi, providing demanding and exhausting technical stretches, numerous obstacles to negotiate, rapids with massive stopper waves, and huge drops and holes.

Midrand-based paddlers John Greeff and Byron Sadler enjoyed participating in the race and according to Jennie Dallas, PRO for the Gauteng Canoe Union, the two were looking forward to the Dusi.

They were among a number of paddlers from Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape who participated in the event as the rivers in these regions were not flowing due to drought conditions.

Dallas thanked Kia-Hyundai Fourways dealership which provided a bus to transport paddlers to the start after leaving their cars at the finish, and also assisted with marshalling of paddlers through sections where the river was too dangerous due to fallen trees.
