Senior’s golf lift off

MIDRAND - The South African Senior Open Championships took place at Blue Valley Golf and Country Club.

“This is a tournament that is all about the title,” said the organiser, Pat Lowth.

The golfer who walked away with the title and trophy, Steve Williams, agreed and said, “This is a great honour,” as he thanked Lowth and the club for a well-organised three-day tournament.

As an amateur, Williams did not share in the prize fund of R100 000. He had a slow start in the tournament, carding a one over par 72 on the first day, but then came back on day two and three shooting four under par in each round to finish on seven under par for the tournament.

Runner up was professional Rodger Govender on five under par, and fellow pro, Ashley Roestoff took third carding a two under par.

Lowth said the tournament was an annual tournament which received a lot of support from professional golfers such as Bobby Lincoln, Michael Green and Steve van Vuuren. “As long as you’re 50 years and older, anyone may participate in the tournament,” he said.
