Settle e-toll bill before you hit financial problems

After ignoring e-tolls for a year, I decided to go and check how much I owe. Thinking it would be a small amount I was shocked to find out that I owe R2 000.

I queried the amount with the staff at an e-tolls office, but every trip they captured really was mine. While I was blissfully driving around on the highway since September with my new car, without an e-tag, I was living under the misguided hope that e-tolls would not capture every trip I made on the highway.

I have made the decision to slowly pay the amount I owe, because if I don’t, it will be R4 000 in the next 12 months. That outstanding bill might one day make my life difficult.

Somehow, you never know what government may decide to do to force people to pay e-tolls.

It is annoying that we have to pay for something we did not ask for in the first place, but as long as I drive to work daily, it is something I have to pay. I was one of the many motorists who vowed they would never settle their e-toll bill but it is becoming a looming figure, leaving it unpaid is starting to worry me.
