New life-size chessboard excites pupils

MIDRAND - The Valley Pre-primary School pupils were very excited to use a life-sized chessboard recently purchased by the school.

Principal Rosemarie Rogerson said, “The children absolutely loved it. We have chess as an extra mural activity at the school. We have seen a huge improvement in the children’s concentration and problem-solving due to playing chess.”

Rogerson stated that chess master, Jerry Meyers, believes chess should be offered in all schools as it develops memory, improves concentration and logical thinking.

“Meyers believes chess develops the capability to predict and foresee consequences of actions. This school of thought also maintains that children obtain a higher reading and maths level and greater learning ability as a result of playing chess,” said Roberson.

The principal explained that the decision to start a chess programme and purchase the life-sized chessboard was primarily due to the benefits chess provides.
