Beware of house robbers, Ivory Park police warn

MIDRAND - Ivory Park police are appealing to residents in Ivory Park to be vigilant, especially at night, due to persistent house robberies in the area.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said, “Recently a man told police that while he was asleep in his house in Ivory Park Ext 2, [when he was woken by] a knock at the door. He opened the door, thinking it was his brother who had gone out.”

The complainant was surprised to see two unknown males who allegedly forced their way in. The suspects were carrying knives and allegedly robbed him of his money and a cellphone.

“The community must be alert to suspects who are breaking down doors and committing house robberies at night in homes in Ivory Park,” said Sekgobela.

Safety precautions from Ivory Park police:

  •  Do not allow strangers into your house without having properly identified them, especially at night
  •  Keep security lights on outside the house at night to improve visibility
  •  Make sure you close curtains so that you or the inside of your home are not visible from the outside at night or during the day
  •  Make sure doors and windows are properly closed and locked before going to sleep
  •  It is important to have well cared-for dogs, they serve as a deterrent
  •  Clear bushes near gates and other potential hiding places
  •  Have a good relationship with your neighbours so you will be in a position to support and help each other.
