Titanic relives its glory days

JOBURG - RAVE reviews followed the opening of Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition held at The Zone in Rosebank.

The show offers ticket holders the opportunity to view original artifacts from RMS Titanic that have been brought up from the seabed. Artifacts ranging from dinner plates bearing the White Star Line logo, to vials of perfume and bottles of wine are on display. The exhibition focuses on the people of the Titanic and tells their stories in tragic detail.

On arrival at the exhibition, ‘passengers’ are given a boarding pass to enter and begin a journey through the sad events of April 1912. Passengers have all the time they need to take in the tragedy. Replica cabins and dinner menus show how the luxury of first class stood in stark contrast to the minimalism that was third class.

The exhibition features a mini-cinema which shows documentaries about RMS Titanic, a real iceberg that can be touched by anyone willing to brave the cold, there are dozens of artifacts, information sheets and copies of SOS messages. Well-informed staff also offer unique insight into the fateful night RMS Titanic met her end.

The exhibition is educational and certainly emotional, and suitable for young and old. It runs until 8 November, and tickets cost R85 for children and R135 for adults.
