Is this your bakkie?

MIDRAND - Thulare said he noticed a bakkie standing outside his office block, near the taxi rank in Halfway House, for about three months.

“Three months ago, I reported the bakkie [with the registration] BPP082GP, to the police. The car might have been standing there for longer.”

He said the police told him that the car had not been reported stolen or hijacked, therefore, there was nothing they could do. Constable Matome Tlamela, head of communications at Midrand Police Station confirmed this. “Our hands are tied when it comes to such matters because we don’t know why the owner left it there; he or she could have just parked it.”

Thulare said he could not bear to see the car being stripped by nyaope addicts. “I tried again to ask the police on what to do and they couldn’t help me.”

Thulare then took it upon himself to find the owner. He even had the car moved to a safe location, and would like the owner to come forward and claim the car.

Tlamela has advised the community that should someone leave a car unattended, they can have it impounded by Metro police. She also said details such as the owner’s address could be found on their systems, however, it was not within their mandate to give this sort of information to the public. “Should the public encounter this again, they should contact Metro police to impound the car and for safe keeping.”
