Food For Life Midrand takes part in Mandela Day

MIDRAND - Food for Life Midrand, an organisation that is involved in feeding programmes around Midrand, served meals to Tumelo Home for the Mentally Handicapped, the Thuthukani Centre and the New Jerusalem Children’s Home on Mandela Day.

The organisation’s chairperson Vinesh Maraharaj said many new volunteers as well as regular ones braved the morning chill to assist with the Mandela Day feeding programme.

According to Food For Life, 18-year-old Justine Govender, who assisted for the first time at the Thuthukani Centre, said she would be back again to support the monthly feeding programme. “It was amazing to see and experience these little kids being loved.”

A volunteer with Food For Life Midrand, Linda Gqomfa, also said there is nothing as terrible as going hungry, but providing food changes a person’s attitude.

New Jerusalem Children Home’s public relations officer Patrick Emorhokpor said, “We appreciate the meals Food For Life Midrand served and the time they spent with the children.”

Vusi Makhubo, who works at the Thuthukani Centre, said the management at the home was grateful for Food For Life’s support. Makhubo added, “Not only on Mandela Day, but every day is about helping less fortunate children. Food For Life Midrand is great in this area as they interact with the children on a monthly basis.”

Food For Life would like to thank the sponsors, volunteers and the organisation’s Midrand team for the help on Mandela Day.
