Woman shot in President Park by burglars

PRESIDENT PARK - Midrand police said a woman was shot in the thigh in her home in President Park after an unknown number of suspects gained entry on the evening of 23 June.

The victim was with her son when she was shot, but he was not harmed. Police spokesperson Constable Matome Tlamela said the victim’s son told them that one shot was fired.

“Police found a cartridge at the side of the bed,” said Tlamela.

“The suspects also stole two cellphones while inside the home. The victim was taken to Life Carstenhof Clinic for treatment.”

Tlamela added that police received a call about a house robbery in progress in President Park while patrolling in Sector 1. Police drove to the scene and were told by the victim’s neighbour that she had heard a gunshot and checked through her window. The neighbour heard male voices and pressed her panic button. She noticed one suspect wearing a red cap and blue jeans running towards nearby bushes.

President Park Residents’ Association chairperson John Gainsford said residents must take the time to meet and get to know their neighbours so they can help each other. “Many residents in President Park are unaware of the high levels of crime in the area,” he said.

“By sharing crime trends and tips we prevent vicious attacks and keep everyone informed.”

Ward 110 councillor Stephen Lamola said crime in President Park, like most of the country, was of great concern. “Metro police and community members patrol the area, but criminals still cause havoc in residents’ homes,” he said.

“If you see someone commit a crime, don’t keep silent.”

No suspects have been arrested yet.
