Families displaced by fire

PRESIDENT PARK - THREE families living in shipping containers converted into houses on Anne Road in President Park have lost their homes and property in a veld fire that burnt through the border of their employer's property.

It is alleged that a passerby could have started a fire near a neglected property which belongs to a neighbour on Anne Road on 24 May.

A woman and her children were home at the time the fire started. She managed to get the children out safely but was unable to save anything else. As each person returned from work, they found ashes where their homes once stood.

Oliver Macitha, one of the displaced people, said they have no idea how the fire started. “I feel lost now, I have lost everything I had.” He said they are disappointed but are starting to rebuild their lives again.

A member of the President Park Residents’ Association, Karen Harris, is pleading with residents to assist the families. “Please help in whatever way you can. President Park Resident’s Association members have been tremendous, we managed to collect blankets, pillows, jackets and clothing for the families.”

Harris added that the families are currently being housed on an empty property on Anne Road.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said, “The cause of the fire is still unknown and there were no injuries reported from the incident.”
