European Film Festival comes to SA

JOBURG -Cinema Nouveau is bringing the European Film Festival (EUFF) to South Africa.

The festival returns to South Africa as a result of its great success last year, with this year’s theme being A Woman’s World.

Under the theme, the films that will be screened explore and celebrate the role of women in film, in addition to featuring female directors, strong female characters or women-related stories.

The festival is hosted by Cinema Nouveau, co-ordinated by the French Institute of South Africa, and organised in partnership with the European Union and 12 other European cultural agencies or embassies in South Africa.

All 12 films that will be screened at various Cinema Nouveaus during May have been internationally acclaimed – 11 of which will be screened in South Africa for the very first time.

“The films selected represent the best of today’s European cinema and we hope the South African audience will once again enjoy this special treat for cinema lovers,” said EUFF 2015 Director, Frédéric Chambon.

Darryl Els, programmer of EUFF 2015, is confident that this year’s selection will bring a much-needed series of female views, voices, perspectives, opinions, images and narratives to the local South African movie scene.

Lola Gallant, brand manager of Cinema Nouveau, is delighted that the festival has returned to Cinema Nouveau.

“We pride ourselves on providing a platform to screen the best foreign language fare, and the 12 films lined up for the EUFF 2015 in May are must-see content.” she said.

“We are privileged to offer these films, many of which would otherwise not be accessible to local cinema audiences, as part of the festival, and we are grateful for the support from all the partners involved in getting these films onto our cinema screens.”

The festival will run from 8 to 17 May, with 12 films being screened across multiple cinemas including Rosebank Cinema Nouveau.
