Choosing charity over a birthday party

MIDRAND - Arianna Haripersad will celebrate her 10th birthday on 26 April in a special way.

This young lady has dedicated her birthday to the well-being of the animals at the Midrand SPCA.

When asked as to what she would like for her birthday, her answer was simple, “I don’t want a birthday party. All I want is to collect food, blankets and funds for the SPCA and for the rhino fund.”

Her mother, Shakthi Haripersad, said she is extremely proud of her daughter’s animal welfare interest. “As she is getting older, she is becoming more aware of the [needs of the world around her,]” she said.

According to Haripersad, the recent death of their family pet, a dog named Snowy, could have led to her daughter’s surprising birthday wish. However, she said the family is supporting her all the way. “We will be at Carlswald Lifestyle Centre with her for the donation drive.”

Arianna has asked all her friends to bring her a bag of food instead of giving a gift for herself. She has gone as far as approaching her school to also get involved and now she is also appealing to the public.

“Redford House, her school, has landed tremendous support to her,” said the young girl’s mother.

On the day, she will also sell some Anti-Animal Cruelty Cupcakes and homemade biscuits in order to raise some funds.

Brenda Lucas of the SPCA said, “We’d like to thank Arianna for the gift of giving. We appreciate her kindness and generosity and we truly admire her for this selfless act. We will be there on 26 April to celebrate this special day with her.”
